Should I get a battery?

If you’re asking whether a home battery is worth it, you’re already thinking about energy the right way: usage, timing, and what you pay at the meter, not just panel count or brand names.

What a battery actually does

A home battery stores electricity for later. Most people pair one with solar PV so you can use sunshine after dark, but batteries can also make sense if you charge cheaply overnight on a time-of-use tariff and discharge when power is expensive. It’s not magic, it’s shifting kilowatt-hours to when you need them.

Who tends to benefit most

  • Solar already on the roof (or planned). The more you self-consume instead of exporting at low rates, the easier it is to build a sensible case.
  • Evening-heavy usage. If your demand peaks after work when solar has faded, stored energy lines up with how you live.
  • Flexible tariffs. If you can charge off-peak and avoid peak import, the maths improves, but tariffs change, so we model cautiously.

Payback: be wary of simple stories

Payback depends on your import price, export rate, system size, how much you cycle the battery, hardware cost, and how long you stay in the property. Generic figures online rarely match your house. Our solar savings estimator is a starting point for generation and rough economics; a survey tailors storage sizing and wiring reality (e.g. AC vs DC-coupled options) to your install.

When it might not be the first purchase

If you don’t yet have a sensible solar size for your roof, or your usage doesn’t justify storage yet, sometimes improving fabric, controls, or getting the PV design right comes first. A battery rarely fixes a roof that’s the wrong shape for solar or a system that’s massively oversized for your usage. We’d rather you spend in the right order than stack shiny kit in the wrong sequence.

Bottom line

A battery can be a great addition when it matches your generation, tariffs, and how you use power. The question isn’t “is batteries good?”, it’s whether your home, usage, and timeline make storage the next best step.
